Karen Chiang
Flute
Karen Chiang is a flutist known for her expressive artistry and versatility as a soloist, orchestral, and chamber musician. Her musical journey began at the age of five, when she started learning piano through the Suzuki Association. The Suzuki philosophy shaped her early musical experiences through listening, repetition, and a nurturing environment. Annual performances at Suzuki Association concerts helped her build confidence, poise, and a lifelong joy for sharing music.
Karen recently earned her Master of Music in Flute Performance from Boston University, studying under the tutelage of Linda Toote. As a member of the Boston University Symphony Orchestra (2023–2025), she performed major symphonic works and opera productions under esteemed conductors, strengthening her ensemble skills, musical leadership, and sensitivity.
She previously completed her Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance at the University of Toronto, where she studied with Nora Shulman and performed extensively with the University of Toronto Symphony Orchestra.
A passionate educator, Karen holds registered teacher training with the Suzuki Association of the Americas, including Suzuki Philosophy and Units 1–4. She completed a month-long teacher training program with Ivy Huang through the Taiwan Suzuki Association in 2020 and participated in a virtual workshop led by Kathleen Schoen at the Great Lakes Suzuki Summer Institute in 2021, further developing her approach to teaching young children.
In addition to her performance work, Karen served as a teaching assistant at Boston University, where she provided weekly private instruction to graduate non-major flute students. This experience deepened her ability to adapt lessons to diverse learning styles while fostering confidence and musical growth. She believes music education requires patience, empathy, and strong communication, and she strives to create a supportive environment where students can explore a variety of musical genres, develop curiosity, and build a lifelong appreciation for music.
As a dedicated performer, Karen continues to grow artistically through masterclasses and intensive study with leading flutists. She has worked closely with Emmanuel Pahud and Julien Beaudiment at the Domaine Forget International Music Festival, and participated in masterclasses with Marina Piccinini, Timothy Hagen, and others. She has also performed for esteemed flutists including Philippe Bernold, Sebastian Jacot, Philipp Jundt, Dejan Gavrić, Aslıhan And, and Gareth McLearnon.
Karen remains deeply committed to both performance and education, continually striving to inspire others through music and to grow as a well-rounded, expressive, and thoughtful artist.
